Business records, 1850-1857.

This small collection of correspondence from customers of R. Hoe & Company contains information about orders for presses (notably the cylinder press) and types and other printing equipment. There is information on customer complaints, prices, problems relating to the delivery of printing equipment, and various other business matters. Letters come from all parts of the country, but notably from Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Richmond, and Cincinnati. The correspondence covers the years 1850-1851, 1853, 1855, and 1857.

R. Hoe & Co. was the largest manufacturer of printing presses and press equipment in the United States during the 19th century. Its archives were dispersed in the 1970s, and later still, the letter books from which this collection derives were disassembled.
